VJMC Tech Tip
Home Made Valve Spring Compression Tool

By Ken Carlson

As usual, I needed a special tool for my motorcycle hobby and no one seemed to have one to loan me. After soliciting suggestions from the VJMC chatline, I decided to make my own. The major part of this tool is a large oversize C-clamp.
You can use a cheap one as the force needed to compress the spring is small.

The first picture shows a side view of the assembled tool.

Looking closely, you will see a pipe coupling cut in half and two studs welded to the sides.

The shoe is just a short piece of pipe with the side cut out but leaving the bottom ring
to push down on the spring retainer.

The benefit of using a pipe and coupling is that the position of the shoe can be rotated
as needed for different heads and valves.

Well that is about all there is to this tool, I used it last night and it was great.
